Frequently Asked Questions About LeadPress

What is ketamine?

Ketamine has long history of being a safe drug. In high doses it is used as an anesthetic during surgery. When it’s used in low doses it does not have any anesthetic effect but provides two benefits: it relieves pain and balances brain chemicals associated with psychiatric and sleep disorders.

What are indications for ketamine?

Ketamine can help in treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD and insomnia. A patient is considered “treatment-resistant” when they have received at least two different medications, yet their condition has not improved. Studies suggest that ketamine may reduce suicidal thoughts and ideations, and alleviate other depressive symptoms. Ketamine is not yet been approved by the FDA as a treatment for depression (though trials are underway the world over) thus the intravenous infusion of ketamine is administered under the direction of Dr. Deepika Bhargava, an experienced Board Certified psychiatrist.

How does ketamine infusion work?

Ketamine Infusion Therapy is the most reliable way of delivering the medication that immediately begins to treat depression, anxiety, pain and suicidal ideation. It is also proven to be effective in PTSD, OCD, chronic pain and RSD. Ketamine has a long history of being a reliable drug for anesthesia. The dosage for KIT is low dose and does not induce anesthesia. At such doses, Ketamine is neuroprotective by working on NMDA receptors, repairing the stress induced damage in the brain’s communication system. Ketamine is able to promote the materials necessary to make repairs to this brain damage within hours.

What is the protocol for ketamine infusion?

Potential participants first meet Dr. Bhargava for treatment resistant mood disorder evaluation, when all treatment options, including ketamine infusion, will be discussed. Only if appropriate, ketamine will be prescribed. Patients also are informed of all risks of the procedure, including possible side effects such as problems with attention, learning or memory.

What is the actual procedure?

The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes in a calm music filled environment, followed by one-hour observation period. Ketamine may cause minimal sedation, visual perception changes, feelings of lightheadedness or floating during treatment. Many patients typically don’t experience side effects. Your dose is always tailored to yoru specifc needs.
A typical course of treatment includes 6 infusions over an 6-week period. (typically, one treatments a week for 6 weeks, followed by more weekly treatments if needed). Results are noticed in the first one or two infusions. Dr. Bhargava will closely monitor your improvement and make adjustments to treatment as needed.

What is the cost of treatment?

Ketamine therapy is currently non-reimbursable by insurance but is available at a self-pay cost of $600 per infusion, which is well below the typical rate in this region. A full course of 6 treatments will total $3,600.
